One Problem After Another

I think that our media has focused way too much attention on negative things that are happening with celebrities rather than with what’s really important.  I think Maria’s conversation in class today about Global warming showed a perfect example of how a major issue isn’t addressed the way it should be.  I realize that our culture is very into celebrities and their trends so I decided to address the sad issue of what’s going on with Britney Spears.

I found this article that addresses some of the terrible things that Spears is experiencing this week.  Although she is constantly in the public eye, you kind of have to feel bad for her.  Yes, she shaved her head and is checking in and out of rehab but doesn’t that make people feel bad for her because obviously there is something wrong with her.  I found this article interesting because besides all of the rehab issues the article discusses the idea that her ex-husband Kevin Federline (who many people just see as a joke) is trying to gain custody of their two children.  Really though, with his background would he be the most stable father?  I don’t know much about him but really the people you have to feel sorry for are the children in this situation.  Although it’s really not the most important issue in the entire world, I think that this will be an interesting case to follow.

  1. I agree with you. All though Global Warming is a much, much, much bigger issue than Britney Spears breakdown, lets face it, you can’t get a way from it. In general, I hear more news about celebrities than I do about environment issues such as global warming. I feel that Britney Spears’ has reached her wits end. I think shes been constantly badgered and beaten down my the press ever since she came on the scene several years ago with “Hit me baby… one more time.” There is always something new that the press is hounding her about. If its not with her choice of wardrobe, the divorce from Kevin Federline, or her mothering skills, its just something else. I think this final incident with her shaving her head was just her last straw. I think shes reached her peak. She was pushed to the limit and finally she snapped. I think the newest gossip is that she is going back into rehab and is actually going to stay in. Hopefully she can turn her life around. If not for herself, then for her two children.

  2. I agree with both of you. It seems that we can’t escape the barrage of “news” on every celebrity’s life, but when it comes to global warming we seem to have to pry just to get a little bit of reliable information. I’ve never been a fan of Britney, but I kind of feel bad for her right now. It can’t be easy to go through a divorce with two kids and have the press capturing your every move and mistake (which granted, have been quite a few). However, I feel the worst for her kids. They’re too young to remember much, if any, of this, but I’m sure they’ll read about it in a few years. I think their life will be rough enough without having to hear all about what their mom used to do in her spare time. I’m definitely not a huge fan of Kevin Federline, but I have to say that I’ve wondered if he would be a better choice in terms of parental custody during this time. At this point, the kids are probably in the care of a nanny (as I’m assuming they have been throughout much of their short little lives) so what is the difference between Britney’s nanny and Kevin’s nanny? Neither one of them seemed to be great parents, but they are so now they need to get it together and do what is best for their kids who unfortunately have no choice in the matter.

  3. I also just saw this link after I posted my comment. It’s from Salon discussing how Britney’s situation is no longer that comical. http://www.salon.com/mwt/feature/2007/02/23/britney_meltdown/index.html?source=rss

  4. I agree with you completely. This is actually what I blogged about too. I think its awful that the media is constantly laying Britney’s personal life out in the open. Yes, there is definitely something wrong with her, but it’s high time that we just let her be. This media attention certainly isn’t helping her any. I also feel bad for her kids because at this point I don’t think neither of them are suitable for parenthood.

  5. The first thing that would probably help Spears in less spotlight int he media. Give the poor girl a break. Don’t they have other celebs to go bother. We as the viewer and listeners of the media probably don’t even know the whole story about this issue. We are just hearing the cruel stuff. There has got to be a boundary in the media. It’s ridiculous!
