I think that having the death penalty be the punishment for killing an officer of the law is absolutely ridiculous. Why do pepole of the law have any significance over other innocent people who are killed. So a man can kill a child and just get life in jail but heaven forbid you kill an officer you get the death penalty. If a crime is commited towards a person who has no tie to the law that person who commited the crime should suffer the maximum consequence as well!

I don't agree with the Death Penalty in any way, shape or form. To be honest other than this being a moral issue for me, I also feel like it's a complete cop out. Here you have a person that's done a horrible deed. So instead of putting him through the pains of prison and confinement, you kill him. I think that he should have to suffer, lethal injection kills them quickly and relatively painlessly. I'd rather have someone go through prison and live, knowing and regreting what they did every day. I also would have to agree with Christine in regards to a police officer's life being more valuable than a average person. A life is a life, plain and simple. I think that if this happened to a normal, average person he should suffer the same consequences.

I think it's really interesting that legislators would consider using the death penalty when a person kills a trooper or other law enforcement person. Honestly, I feel like this relates a lot to what we discussing today in class in regards to saying that a child's life is worth more than a woman's. In this situation who's to say that a police officer's life is worth anymore than the average person who gets killed? I don't mean to take anything away from the fact that this trooper has left behind a wife and small child who will unfortunately not remember his/her father, but many other people who are victims of crimes also leave behind family members and friends. Obviously the death penalty is an extremely controversial so I won't really get into that, but I really don't understand how legislators could decide the death penalty is appropriate when a cop is killed, but the loss of other people's lives isn't as important if they're killed.

For my letter to the editor I related the events that occured at Virginia Tech back to September 11th also. My letter to the editor was in response to a man's letter to his son about how although he knows his son may be frustrated in the things he was saying, the father wanted to tell him how mcuh he loved and appreciated him. Although it is unfortunate that it takes events such as this for someone to truely express their feelings, I understand. I feel as if people do not take for granted the people in their lives but that they take for granted assuming that people know how they feel. I feel as if they may already know how much you care, it doesn't hurt reminding them for no reason every once in a while.

This is a really interesting topic. I actually had to discuss this in my ethics and values class. Its incredible how the actions of one person can affect a whole body of people. In the case of 9/11, muslim people were targeted. It is so awful to see a whole people punished for the wrongdoings of one individual. Its also sad to say but even the most caring and tolerant people give into a particular stereotype.Ultimately the question here is how do we keep a tolerant world view and not be naive at the same time?

First of all, I cannot figure out for the life of me how to log in and leave people comments. Regardless :). I heard Don Imus was fired as well. Which, I'm quite surprised about. I realize there was a lot of contraversy regarding his comments, and rightfully so. But, he had a hugeee listener base for MSNBC. And, sometimes quantity, takes over quality. But, good thing it didn't this time. He apologized, that's great. He already dug himself a huge whole though. I think it was great how the Rutgers team reacted, it really put them in a good light.

I was just watching CNN and heard that Don Imus was actually fired this afternoon. To be quite honest with you I am very glad that justice is being served. No one, I don't care who you are or where you come from should make sexist and racist comments such as the ones made on Imus's radio show. I don't know if anyone was able to witness the Rutgers womens basketball team's press conference, but it was an astounding display of mercy and forgiveness. Despite the remarks made by Imus, the Women's team banded together and responded with dignity. I just hope that this teaches all of us a lesson in respect. Differences should be appreciated and celebrated and not belittled.

Serving on jury? I don't know how I like that idea. These people just came out of jail and who knows if it has changed them. The state wants to give them a right to decide the fate of someone else. Um I think not.
